How BIM is evaluated with various BIM Levels

There is technological evolution in construction industry. The construction industry is embraced with numerous technologies. Amid these technologies, BIM is considered as the game-changer.

With BIM it becomes easier to develop a digital prototype of a building. This feature enhances the flow of data during the progression of the building and as a result utmost productivities can be achieved.

After its emergence, BIM has undergone several changes which range from level 0 to level 3 (the most updated one). BIM has become more superior, more rationalized and more powerful in the past couple of years. Given below the brief description of BIM Levels.

Level 0 - Unmanaged CAD in 2D involving paper (or electronic paper) data exchange.

Level 1 - Managed CAD in 2D or 3D format through a collaborative tool that produces a common data environment together with a interchangeable approach to data structure and format. Commercial data is controlled with autonomous finance and cost management bundles with no consolidation.

Level 2 - A managed 3D environment constrains different discipline "BIM" tools by means of attaching data. Commercial data is controlled with enterprise resource planning software and incorporated with proprietary interfaces. This level of BIM may include 4D construction sequencing and/or 5D cost information.

Level 3 - A completely consolidated and collaborative process empowered with "web services" and adheres to nascent Industry Foundation Class (IFC) standards. This level of BIM will comprise of 4D construction sequencing, 5D cost information and 6D project lifecycle management information.

How construction professionals can build pile wall systems by integrating Revit 2017 and Dynamo extension for Revit

This Revit tutorial briefly explains how to apply Revit 2017 together with Dynamo for building a piled wall system. This method will be useful for contig or secant piled wall systems.

Dynamo refers to a visual programming language extension within Revit softwar. Dynamo extension can automate tedious manual Revit tasks. With Dynamo, the users can efficiently manoeuvre data, sculpt geometry, delve into design options, automate processes, and generate links amid numerous applications. Dynamo is free and supports Revit 2015, 2016, and 2017.

While developing Piled wall systems inside Revit, it requires to generate a structural wall and next 2D detail in plan to represent a piled wall system or usually set each male and female pile as well as apply the array or copy commands.

But the process becomes tedious when curves and turns are conflicted inside the path. Dynamo can easily resolve this issue and be applied for sheet piling along with secant and contiguous systems.

The newest CIC BIM Standards for Hong Kong

InteliBuild formulates and publishes newest CIC BIM Standards in association with The Hong Kong Construction Industry Council (CIC), Task Group on Establishment of Industry Standard for BIM Implementation. One can download The Hong Kong CIC BIM Standards from this link Download Here (http://www.hkcic.org).

The BIM standards approach some significant issues which are creating barriers to implement BIM in Hong Kong.

The CIC BIM Standards are developed on the basis of the existing BIM standards of the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA), MTR Corporation Limited (MTRC) andHong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM).

The Standards are written following the best regional and international standards and practices along with PAS 1192BCA Singapore BIM Guide and the BIM Forum LOD Specification.

Client Leadership: The CIC BIM Standards are adopted to facilitate the client to identify, control and evaluate BIM deliverables with architects, engineers, surveyors and contractors. The CIC BIM Standards is developed on the basis of the planning, execution, management and examination concerning the application of BIM on a project which necessitate client direction, involvement and leadership. In order to implement BIM on a project, it will also need design consultant and contractor collaboration.

How Architects and Engineers embrace BIM: Building Information Modelling is a useful method for developing and controlling building data throughout its design, construction and operations. The BIM method requires that architects and engineers employ BIM software for designing any projects.

The successful implementation of BIM completely depends on proper BIM training. It is essential that the architects and engineers should undergo proper training on how to employ BIM procedures and tools to develop their design drawings in-house.

BIM Project Execution Plan and Professional BIM Manager: The CIC BIM Standards are adopted for the purpose of outlining the scope of work associated with BIM, the liabilities of the project participants and the deliverables from the BIM process by employing a BIM Project Execution Plan. If a client does not contain sufficient knowledge for identifying or managing the application of BIM, a BIM Manager can be employed to deal with the employers needs as well as a BIM Project Execution Plan (BIM PXP or BEP).

The BIM PXP should plan the broad vision for the project and offer execution details for the consultants and contractors to maintain all through the project. The BIM PXP must be formulated at the initial stage of the project and upgraded during the project when design team members, contractors and sub-contractors are selected.

The client must assign a professional BIM Manager to guide and support the BIM process. The BIM Manager belongs to an architect, engineer, surveyor or contractor or a certified independent professional BIM Manager with appropriate practical construction knowledge and design coordination experience.

Steel Connections for Revit is a structural connection add-in as well as an API-supported user interface that allows to observe comprehensive structural connector geometry and to adjust extra parameters in the Revit modeling environment.

The users can apply the connection tool to include a structural connection to various elements in their structural model.

To use this, go to structural tab, then select connection panel and finally connection. If structural connection add-ins are not set up, only the symbolic generic connection is accessible. Exact Revit add-ins should be set up to open models with add-in structural connections. If not, the connection will be visible but becomes uneditable. While unloading an add-in structural connection from the Structural Connection Settings dialog, any illustration of that connection will be removed from the model.

The objective of Revit structural connections is to transfer information on the designed connection amid engineers, detailers, and fabricators. This data is stored in the project.

Brief information on connections contains the following:
• Connection type or styles
• Detailed geometry
• Analytical forces and data
• Materials
• Fabricator identification
By default, connections contain elementary parameters about identity data and phasing. Include project parameters and shared parameters to the Structural Connections category to comprise particular information to be preserved and distributed with project stakeholders.
